How To Increase Sperm Motility

Sperm motility is a characteristic of a sperm cell to move and swim towards the egg in order to facilitate fertilization. Low sperm count and motility is the leading cause of male infertility. Up to 40 per cent of infertility problems can be on a man’s side, yet in the early stages of investigation, the focus is entirely on the woman. Infertility investigations should include both partners. Low Sperm motility can either be temporal or permanent. A temporary reduction in sperm production is related to various causes like cycling for long hours, lack of adequate nutrition, exposure to extreme heat, ill fitting briefs, lack of adequate sleep, and emotional stress. These are some of the causes of low sperm count in men. Below are more activities that may likely cause low sperm count.

Causes of Low Sperm Count and motility

  • Hot Baths and hot Tubs
  • illness
  • Over exercise
  • Saunas
  • Fever
  • Bun Huggers – tight fitting briefs
  • Bicycling – Sitting on a bike seat may cause damage
  • Advanced age
  • Work and life pressures.
  • Prescription and over the counter medications
  • Emotional Stress
  • Bad lubricants.
  • Drug abuse
  • Smoking – reduces sperm lifespan
  • Alcohol
  • Nutritional Deficiencies  especially zinc and selenium
  • Other Biological and Environmental Factors

Lifestyle Changes To Improve Low Sperm Count and motility

  1. Get regular exercise: Though you should avoid vigorous training programs, regular and moderate exercise helps you maintain a healthy body weight, helps control stress, and gives you a healthier overall body.
  2. Perform relaxation exercises: Since infertility and life in general can be stressful, learn to relax. Stress is sometimes responsible for certain infertility problems such as hormonal imbalances.
  3. Maintain a healthy weight: Not too under or overweight since weight influences estrogen and testosterone levels.
  4. Consume enough essential fatty acids: Everyone knows that an excess of bad fats can be damaging to your health, and this also applies to your sperm count. However, essential fatty acids or the good fats can help to boost healthy sperm production. These can be taken in form of fish, krill or flax seed oil.
  5. In addition to consuming essential fatty acids, some experts advise another effective approach on how to increase sperm motility is through eating the right nutrients. Zinc rich foods such as oysters, liver, lean red meat, nuts and grains help improve motility and maximize semen volume. Also, by eating selenium rich foods can be helpful to the testes to make selenoproteins, a vital amino acid used to boost semen production. Examples of selenium rich food are sunflower seeds, cashew nuts, brewers yeast, shell fish, brazil nuts, tuna, egg yolk and kidneys.
  6. L-Carnitine and L-Arginine  are amino acids is essential for normal functioning of sperm cells. According to research, it appears that the higher the levels of both L-Carnitine and L-Arginine in the sperm cells, the better the sperm count and motility
  7.  Avoid vigorous exercise, hot tubs, and saunas since they raise the body temperature and may cause reduced sperm count.
  8. Red peppers, carrots, oatmeal, dried apricots. The vitamins A in these foods help grow healthy sperm.
  9. Taking age into consideration: A man’s fertility begins to decrease after he is thirty so take this into consideration when deciding when to have children.
  10. Do not over heat your food.  Excessive heating of the body has been shown to reduce sperm counts and motility
  11. Give up the bad habits.  Quit smoking, drinking and substance abuse.
  12. Refrain from sex and or masturbation three days before the ovulation period. This will give the sperm a chance to build up.  The more the sperm, the better chance of conceiving.
